Weaves

Most Maille fit into one of five categories:

Japanese:  The Japanese family consists of weaves that used traditionally in Japan for armor. Japanese weaves are characterized by the used of 90 degree ring connections, with horizontal rings joined by vertical “connector” rings.

European: The European consists of weaves that were traditionally used for armor and jewelry all across Europe and the Middle East. European weaves typically have a grain that only runs in one direction and two sets of rings that lay in the opposite direction.

Persian: The Persian family is based on a “stacked” ring orientation. This is a modern weave and none were used any period as armor. Though it is similar to European weaves except that in Persian weaves the rings become stacked, resulting in a different grain and tighter weave.

Spiral:  The spiral family is made up of rings linked to form a helical or spiral shape.

Orbital/Captive: Weaves that use rings to “orbit” other rings or are trapped within them.
